Altris, Clarios and InoBat Advance Sodium-Ion Technology Toward Industrialization

Altris, the Swedish developer of Fennac® Prussian White cathode active material, together with Clarios, a global leader in advanced low-voltage battery solutions, and European battery manufacturer InoBat, today announced significant progress in the development of sodium-ion battery technology. The results include validated cold-start performance down to –40°C and mark an important step toward pilot-scale and small-series production readiness.

Over the past months, the partners have completed a new phase of validation activities, including testing with key customers across automotive, heavy-duty, off-highway, commercial vehicle and intralogistics applications.

The results confirmed strong sodium-ion performance under demanding operating conditions and reinforced the relevance of the current cell design across these applications.

The milestone builds on the long-term collaboration between Altris and Clarios, including the Joint Development Agreement centered on the Power Sodium platform. Together with InoBat’s cell-development and manufacturing expertise, the collaboration combines complementary capabilities across materials development, battery systems integration and manufacturing, supporting the development of a more resilient European battery value chain.

The validated performance rests on Altris’ Fennac® Prussian White cathode active material (CAM), whose European scale-up positions the company as a regional source of sodium-ion CAM for cell and battery manufacturers as the technology moves toward series production. The results also show growing commercial interest in sodium-ion across market segments beyond those already validated.

“Automotive low-voltage is one of the most demanding validation environments for sodium-ion technology, and our Prussian White cathode material has now come through it. Proving the chemistry at that standard, with a material that uses no lithium, nickel or cobalt and can be produced in Europe at scale, is what makes the next phase possible,” said Christer Bergquist, CEO of Altris.

“The latest validation results mark an important step forward in our sodium-ion roadmap,” said Federico Morales-Zimmermann, Vice President and General Manager, Global OEM Customers, Products and Engineering at Clarios. “Ongoing validation work with key customers across automotive, heavy-duty and off-highway applications, combined with expanded testing activities and improved low-temperature performance, gives us confidence to move from technology development toward pilot-scale and small-series production. Sodium-ion is becoming a commercially relevant technology pathway for future low-voltage and high-power applications.”
